Keith, a five-year veteran, finished last season with career highs in goals (14), assists (55) and points (69). He also ended with a plus-21 rating in 82 regular-season games.
The 26-year-old Winnipeg native also showed brilliance in the playoffs, recording two goals and 17 points in 22 contests for the Stanley Cup winners.
He is the first Chicago backliner to win the award since Chris Chelios was named best defenseman back in 1996.
Drew Doughty of the Los Angeles Kings and Mike Green of the Washington Capitals were the other two finalists.
Boston Bruins blueliner Zdeno Chara was honored in 2009, breaking a three-year grip that Detroit Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom held on the award from 2006-08.

Adam Morrison, of the Charlotte Bobcats, was the favorite early on in the season after averaging 15+ PPG through the first month of the season. Ever since his torrid start, Morrison’s point production has declined each month. This really isn’t surprising, considering at 6’8” he only weighs 205 lbs. Obviously he will need to hit the weights big time during the off-season in order to keep from breaking down in the future.
